Trump threatens to pull out of Iran deal

Trump threatens to pull out of Iran deal

To keep the USA in the nuclear agreement in the future, senior administration officials said Trump will pressure European partners to agree to impose new conditions on Iranian behavior.

Iran said Saturday it won't accept President Donald Trump's request to change its 2015 nuclear deal after the president threatened to pull out of the accord unless allies agreed to "fix the deal's disastrous flaws".

Trump said four "critical components" must now be worked into the agreement: immediate inspections at all sites requested by worldwide inspectors, measures to ensure Iran "never even comes close to possessing a nuclear weapon", no policy "expiration date", and no distinction between the Islamic Republic's long-range missile and nuclear weapons programmes regarding the imposition of sanctions.

On Saturday the Russian Foreign Ministry said that it took a "rather negative" view of Trump's Friday announcement, warning that Washington's commitment to the nuclear deal should not be taken for granted and calling on the worldwide community to protect the accord.

Trump warned that he would scrap the agreement limiting Iran's nuclear program - an accord he has long despised - unless European countries "join with the United States in fixing significant flaws in the deal".

Britain, France and Germany had called on Trump on Thursday to uphold the pact.

Trump and his top advisers have been negotiating with USA lawmakers on Capitol Hill to try to change sanctions legislation so that Trump does not face a deadline on whether to recertify Iranian compliance with the nuclear deal every 90 days.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Trump is signalling that the decision to withdraw from the multilateral accord "is already made or is about to be made", which he called one of the U.S.'s "largest foreign-policy mistakes, one of the largest miscalculations of American politics." according to Interfax.

The U.S. waived the Iran sanctions provisions of the fiscal year 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

After the President's announcement on Friday, Obama officials who helped negotiate the 2015 agreement reiterated that the accord ensures Iran can not obtain a nuclear weapon.

The White House faced a series of deadlines related to the deal on Friday, most importantly, whether to renew or terminate a waiver for sanctions on Iran's central bank and energy sector.

While Most countries around the world supported the Iran deal, US main allies in the Middle East Israel and Saudi Arabia publicly opposed it and accused Obama of abandoning them in order to secure the deal with Iran.

This would not entail negotiations with Iran but would be the result of talks with European allies, the official said.

President Trump has called it the "one of the worst deals" he has ever seen - but for now, he is keeping the U.S.in the nuclear deal with Iran.

The calculus is trickier within the GOP, which united against the Iran deal when Obama inked it. It prevents Iran from developing nuclear weapons while offering sanctions relief to allow it to participate in worldwide commerce and banking.

First, it must demand that Iran allow immediate inspections at all sites requested by worldwide inspectors.

Iran's Foreign Ministry, sending a strong message to the United States, has named those, whom they consider to be behind the attempt to undermine the deal, which took years and great diplomatic efforts to reach.
