Trump's Personal Lawyer Files Lawsuits Over Russia Dossier

According to a transcript of his testimony that was made public Tuesday, Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson told the Senate Judiciary Committee in August that Steele met with the Federal Bureau of Investigation more than a year ago and quoted Russian sources as saying Trump worked with a Russian election interference campaign of hacking and leaking. There has been speculation, denied by Mr Trump, that the President may seek to fire Mr Mueller.

Cohen said he is mentioned in the dossier 15 times.

BuzzFeed defended its decision to publish the unredacted dossier previous year in a statement to ABC.

At another point in the interview, a lawyer for Fusion GPS, Joshua Levy, makes a jarring assertion: that the dossier's publication had led to someone's murder. Steele recorded claims that Cohen had secret meetings with Kremlin officials in Prague in August 2016, at the height of the campaign, during which he allegedly discussed how to pay Kremlin-associated hackers for their work against the rival Hillary Clinton campaign.

Cohen said he told the panels that he never engaged with, was paid by, or communicated with anyone representing the Russian government, or anyone else, about hacking or interfering with the USA election, hacking the Democratic Party, or about creating fake news stories to assist the Trump campaign or to damage the Hillary Clinton campaign.

"I think this referral is unfortunate as it's clearly another effort to deflect attention from what should be the committee's top priority: determining whether there was collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation to influence the election and whether there was subsequent obstruction of justice", she said.

BuzzFeed published the 35-page document in its entirety in January 2017, noting that the "allegations are unverified, and the report contains errors", but "Americans can make up their own minds about allegations about the president-elect that have circulated at the highest levels of the US government".

The transcript revealed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation allegedly had "an internal Trump campaign source" that verified pieces of intelligence in the dossier.

Attorneys for Michael Cohen said in a statement their client's reputation has been "permanently damaged by these false, reckless and unconscionable statements" made about him in the dossier.

"Enough is enough of the #fake #RussianDossier".

"This is not the first time Trump's personal lawyer has attacked the free press, and we look forward to defending our First Amendment rights in court", he said.

At the time of publication, key members of Congress had acted on contents of the dossier, the FBI was investigating it, and both President Barack Obama and the president-elect had been briefed on it, Smith said.

"The Russia investigation, meanwhile, didn't turn out to be some minor side story but instead the central challenge to Mr. Trump's presidency", he continued. He was involved in discussions about a real estate deal in Moscow in the fall of 2015, months after Trump had declared his presidential bid. Cohen told ABC News in August that while the Trump Organization seriously considered the proposal, the plan was eventually abandoned. The senate committee has called for an open session to be arranged as soon as possible, ABC News reported. Plus, the suits could put Cohen, who worked for the Trump Organization and now is a personal lawyer to Trump himself, in the position of proving that the dossier's allegations are false. After Mr Trump won the Republican nomination, the company was then paid by the Clinton campaign.
