U.S. calls on Iran to unblock social media sites amid protests

Now, Iran's Islamic Republic is seeing a new wave of unrest.

Iran's government also organized two days of mass demonstrations across the country Wednesday and Thursday as a sign of strength and to reassure those anxious about the unrest.

In some areas, opposition on the streets has targeted the heart of the regime, with chants calling for the downfall of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, the head of the country's powerful Revolutionary Guards, said the marches marked an end to the anti-government protests, which he referred to as "the sedition". Iran's fiscal planning remains top-heavy, run by state-directed panels and old-style foundations linked to the ruling theocrats and the military guardians of the system, the Revolutionary Guard.

Unemployment in Iran is about 12 percent but among the youth it reached 28.8 percent in 2017.

"The reality is the Iran nuclear deal was so ill founded because... by only being a ten-year agreement, it virtually guaranteed that they would develop a nuclear weapon after that ten year period of time", Pence told the Voice of America.

"Officials must acknowledge the deplorable situation of the country as the first step to hearing the protesters", tweeted Mohammad Taghi Karroubi, whose father Mehdi Karroubi has been under house arrest for nearly seven years for helping lead the 2009 demonstrations. They started December 28 in Mashhad, Iran's second-largest city, as demonstrators decried the country's weak economy and a surge in food prices. In some cases, protesters have attacked police stations and government buildings.

"They are legitimate avenues for communication", Goldstein said. "They're the base of the Islamic revolution".

The reformists were crushed after the 2009 protests, which challenged the reelection of hard-line populist Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The protests then went nationwide, with calls for the overthrow the entire government.

Iran does allow some labor strikes or unauthorized demonstrations to take place, like when coal miners angry over the deaths of at least 42 of their colleagues in an explosion in May confronted Rouhani during his presidential re-election campaign. As reported, more than 100 people have been arrested during the night.

The United States will "use all the information sources at our disposal to be able to get actionable information about who is doing the crackdown, who is violating human rights, who is using violence against protesters and to feed that in to our sanctions designation machinery", the official said.

Antigovernment protesters have also been demonstrating against alleged government corruption and mismanagement. "Don't you think they would provoke some people?" The official agreed that the unrest is different from the protests in 2009 because the latest events are occurring outside Tehran and are fueled by working-class grievances that are economic in nature, not political.

The administration was also considering additional sanctions against Iran over human rights concerns related to the protests, said a USA official, who wasn't authorized to discuss the plans publicly and demanded anonymity.

"He (Trump) recently called Iranians "a terrorist nation" and used a fake name for the Persian Gulf, stirring the Iranians' national feelings and angering them around the world", the spokesman said. Look at the recent days' incidents.

In addition to the tweets, he cited the State Department's acknowledgment it was making its Farsi language accounts on Facebook and Twitter available through virtual private networks to circumvent government attempts to block access.

Trita Parsi, author of Losing an Enemy - Obama, Iran and the Triumph of Diplomacy, told Sky News that Mr Trump's messages of support were likely "insulting" to Iranian protesters given his record of action against the country, which includes crippling economic sanctions, a travel ban, and a refusal to certify a nuclear deal which had eased economic pressure on Iran.
