U.S. may 'conceivably' re-join Paris local weather settlement, Trump says

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday his primary concern with the Paris climate accord was that it treated the United States unfairly and that if a better deal could be reached, Washington might be persuaded to rejoin the agreement.

Taking a break from flirting with nuclear war on Twitter and slagging off the author of his latest biography, Donald Trump held a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg yesterday. He was referring to the previous Barack Obama administration, which in 2015 together with most of the world's nations signed the global climate treaty in Paris.

The U.S. pledged to reduce its carbon emissions between 26 and 28 percent by 2025 under the agreement, and Trump has consistently said it is a "bad deal" for Washington.

"We could conceivably go back in", Trump reiterated. The United States also joined the non-binding agreement under President Barack Obama, but Trump said a year ago he was withdrawing. "Don't take that away", declared Jan Egeland, a former UN Under Secretary General and the current head of the Norwegian Refugee Council. Experts say there is nothing in the Paris deal which bans specific types of fuels, nor are there any penalties. Also, the treaty takes a bottom-up approach, with each country making its own commitments towards reducing the release of greenhouse gas.

Solberg said the USA was Norway's "closest ally inside NATO" and noted her country's investments in the US, which she said supported 470,000 U.S.jobs. "They have tremendous hydro power, tremendous".

Prime Minister Erna Solberg noted that many Norwegians drive US -made Tesla electric cars and said her country saw "tremendous economic and business opportunities" as nations around the world fight climate change.

"Like other nations that have merit-based immigration, President Trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation", Shah said.
