United Kingdom minister threatens tech giants with large tax bills over terrorist threat

Security Minister Ben Wallace described tech companies such as Facebook and Google as "ruthless profiteers" in an interview with the Sunday Times, adding that they had done little to support government initiatives or law enforcement.

Not mincing any words, he called them "Ruthless profiteers" in an interview with The Sunday Times.

Wallace spoke about how the government has been forced to spend hundreds of millions to run deradicalisation campaigns to rehabilitate individuals who were influenced by vitriolic campaigns run by radical organisations on social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, and YouTube.

YouTube said that almost 70 per cent of violent extremist content was removed within 8 hours of it being uploaded and the company was working to accelerate that speed.

Social media companies have not done enough to help and they have even obstructed government efforts to fight extremism by blocking access to encrypted messages or by allowing extremist content to remain on their sites which is costing taxpayers a great deal of money. I have to have more human surveillance.

"Because of encryption and because of radicalisation, the cost.is heaped on law enforcement agencies".

Facebook expressed its disagreement on Mr. Wallace's statement.

Wallace justified the semi-proposal by saying that companies "will ruthlessly sell our details to loans and soft-porn companies but not give it to our democratically elected government". "That's costing millions", continues Wallace, "they can't get away with that and we should look at all options, including tax". Google's YouTube said it removes 70 percent of extremist material within eight hours, and Twitter claims it removes 75 percent of terrorist accounts before they even tweet, Bloomberg reported following the December 19 hearing.

"Speaking to the Sunday Times, Wallace said" patience is running out fast" for tech giants like Facebook and Google, whom he describes as "ruthless profiteers", raking in large profits at the expense of public safety at a time when the United Kingdom is facing the threat of terrorism.

Facebook's policy director Simon Milner said the security minister was "wrong" to say that the company puts profit before safety.

Youtube, which is owned by Google parent company Alphabet, has increased its "extremist-tackling" technology this year, which resulted in its algorithm removing content from journalists and conflict monitors. "We are committed to being part of the solution and we are doing more every day to tackle these issues".
