White House rejects Steve Bannon's apology to Donald Trump

Steve Bannon left the White House in August of previous year to a hero's return at Breitbart News, the far-right news site he helped turn into the leading voice of conservative politics in America.

He initially left Breitbart in 2016 to lead Mr Trump's unconventional election campaign. Trump had lashed out against the author, claiming that he had not authorised access to the White House for Wolff.

After Bannon's alleged comments about the Trump Tower meeting went viral, the president declared his form campaign executive turned chief strategist had "lost his mind."

The Trump administration has scrambled to control damaging headlines based on Michael Wolff's "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", which was rushed to shelves January 5 over threats from President Donald Trump's attorneys.

Axios described Mr Trump's schedule as "shrinking" because at the start of his presidency it was packed with meetings.

An attorney for the publisher of "Fire and Fury" says no retraction or apology is coming.

But Trump's response to the book's allegations, in tweets and in remarks made during a hastily convened news conference at his Camp David presidential retreat, had Washington focusing anew on the question of his stability and mental state.

The White House has slammed the book, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", with press secretary Sarah Sanders calling it "complete fantasy", and an attorney for Trump sending a "cease and desist" letter to Wolff and the book's publisher. He backed Republican ex-Judge Roy Moore in Alabama's Republican Senate primary over then-Sen. At times when he was president, Reagan seemed forgetful and would lose his train of thought while talking.

"Breitbart depends on private financing because they experienced this massive advertiser boycott", said Kurt Bardella, a former Breitbart spokesman.

"My family and I have not communicated with Steve Bannon in many months and have provided no financial support to his political agenda, nor do we support his recent actions and statements". She had pledged support for Trump "and the platform upon which he was elected".

"I don't believe there's any way back for Mr Bannon at this point", White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said on Air Force One. Steve is a valued part of our legacy, and we will always be grateful for his contributions, and what he helped us to accomplish.

The news was confirmed in a brief statement by Breitbart on Tuesday.
