Woman struck by Brightline train identified

This is the third time that a Brightline train has killed someone.

The train was traveling north on the Florida East Coast Railway tracks near Northeast Sixth Avenue and Boynton Beach Boulevard when it fatally struck the woman shortly before 6:30 p.m., Boynton Beach police Officer Jaclyn Smith said.

The victim identified as Melissa Lavell, 32, was reportedly crossing the train tracks of the new Brightline train when the incident took place, Boynton Beach police said in a statement, U.S. News reported.

In a statement, Brightline president and COO, Patrick Goddard said: "It's always unfortunate when there's an accident like that".

The train was offering a VIP ride from Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach the night before it was set to begin running introductory service. "We continue to stress safety and the adherence to the rules and laws in place around active railroads". Her death was investigated as a suicide. In November, another woman was killed on the tracks in Deerfield Beach. From there they were bused back to Fort Lauderdale.

Miami's Metrorail system had similar incidents before its May 20, 1984, opening.

Mark O'Connell, a 28-year-old Hollywood man fell 40 feet to his death from the Metrorail tracks at the Civic Center station in March 1984. It will expand south and north to take passengers from Miami to Orlando.
