19 migrants killed 79 injured in road accident in Libya: military source

A source from the military has declared the death of over 19 illegal migrants along with 7 injuries in a road accident at Bani Walid, Libyan city.

The truck transporting the migrants flipped over in the town that is known as a hub for smugglers transporting migrants to Italy.

According to a security source, the truck which was transferring more than 150 immigrants was coming from the South to a center involved in human trafficking when it overturned.

The cause of the crash was not yet clear.

The town's hospital appealed to charity and civil society groups to offer immediate assistance to those injured in the accident.

Beni Walid is a major point of movement for illegal immigrants from southern Libya to the coast in the north, where they are transported by boats through the Mediterranean to European shores.

Since the 2011 overthrow and killing of longtime dictator Moamer Kadhafi, chaos-wracked Libya has become a key gateway for migrants trying to reach Europe, often on unseaworthy vessels.
