Afghanistan holds convention to plot course towards terrorism in area

Army Chief General Bajwa will participate in the high level defence conference in the Afghan capital.

Those attending were said to include CENTCOM chief General Joseph Votel, General John Nicholson, commander of USA forces in Afghanistan, and Pakistan's chief of army staff, General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Afghan Defense Ministry spokesman Daulat Waziri told RFE/RL that the chiefs of army staff of about 11-12 countries were attending the meeting, which he said was called by the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). However, he said that residual signs of terrorists were being traced and targeted through the ongoing Radd-ul-Fasaad operation.

They said they didn't intend to damage any other country or let anyone use Afghan territory against anyone else. "Pakistan expects reciprocation in this regard", he said.

He stated that collaborative approach and persistence is the answer to all challenges, for which Pakistan is ready to play its part.

Visiting dignitary also acknowledged and appreciated Pakistan Army's contributions for peace and stability in the region. The high-level conference comes less than a month after a series of deadly attacks rattled Kabul, following which a high-level delegation from Afghanistan comprising the interior minister and spy chief had visited Islamabad with a "personal message" from President Ashraf Ghani.

Earlier, on February 3, a top-level delegation of Pakistan's civil and military leadership, led by Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua, reached Kabul to attend the Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Working Group meeting which worked on the Afghanistan-Pakistan Action Plan for Peace and Solidarity (APAPPS).

Shedding light on the meeting, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif had stressed the need to resolve Pak-Afghan issues bilaterally and said Pakistan "stands with its Afghan brothers in this hour of grief", referring to the recent spate of bomb-and-gun attacks in Kabul which claimed almost 200 lives.
