Apple confirms iOS source code leak, but claims its phones are safe

JUST days ago, Apple suffered a massive leak that saw some of its iOS source code posted online, and now a report reveals the code was originally leaked by a former Apple intern.

It spread beyond the original crew sometime past year, making it onto an online chat group on Discord (a messaging platform for gamers), and then Reddit around four months ago - but that post was subsequently auto-removed by a moderation bot.

Security experts are concerned that after the leak hackers could analyze it closely and find flaws that they could later exploit. "But it has taken particular care to keep iBoot secure and its code private; bugs in the boot process are the most valuable ones if reported to Apple through its bounty program, which values them at a max payment of $200,000". "It is not open-source". Levin believed that the source code posted was real because it is apparently aligned with the source code he reverse-engineered. What made the leak of this source code significant was that iBoot is the code responsible for loading iPhone's operating system.

The most recent software update is iOS 11, and the company claims that over 93% of current Apple users are using iOS 10 or above.

iBoot is extremely important for Apple products's security. "Any *serious* iOS researcher better have it fully reversed by now". "It is considered confidential and proprietary", and could allow hackers to discover iOS vulnerabilities more easily - even in the face of Apple's tightened security measures.

Martin also criticized reports calling the leak the "biggest in history", pointing to past disclosures with far wider-reaching impacts. Microsoft warned at the time that anyone who searching for or sharing such code was engaging in illegal activity, and sent letters to that effect to people who had downloaded the code.

Motherboard discussed with Jonathan Levin, an iOS security researcher and author of books about iOS and Mac OSX internals, the consequences of the leak. "Where exactly it came from, no one is sure for now".
