Experimental Supersonic Plane Gets Full Funding Under Trump's NASA Budget Proposal

The aircraft, the latest addition to the X-series dating back to Chuck Yeager's sound-barrier-breaking craft, the X-1, will be created to be much quieter than previous faster-than-sound jets.

The technology makes it a serious contender for commercial use but NASA's budget constraints and cancellations halted the project.

With the new funding, NASA aims to solve the problem of sonic booms, which have ended previous experiments. It would allow for faster-than-sound travel without the glass-shattering booms that characterize supersonic fighter jets and that enraged Queens, New York, residents during the era of the supersonic New York-to-Europe Concorde jet.

As it is a test bed, you sadly can't expect to fly on QueSST anytime soon, and its first test flight will be in 2021 at the earliest if production goes according to plan.

"This budget maintains a robust investment of $633.9 million to improve air traffic management, make progress integrating unmanned systems into the airspace, and fund an experimental supersonic airplane and increase hypersonics research", NASA Acting Administrator Robert Lightfoot said during the annual State of NASA speech on Monday (Feb. 12).

The experimental plane will accomplish this by using a "low-sound airframe shape" and changing the placement of its engines to mitigate the jarring sonic crash that happens when all the compressed vibrations created by its engines arrive together. And in order to combat the noise and sonic boom, NASA wanted to see a sonic boom 60 dBA lower than other commercial supersonic jets. That is directed to the 1973 Federal Aviation Administration control §91.817, which restricts regular people from taking part in supersonic flight over land in the United States.

Lockheed Martin has been awarded a preliminary budget to build the new quiet X-plane.

The changes made to the shape of the aircraft will disperse the shockwaves across a wide range of points behind it, reducing the noise output to 60 to 65 A-weighted decibels (dBa) or something as loud as a racing luxury vehicle. This would be significantly calmer than existing supersonic planes.

A NASA spokesperson previously said the space agency aims to create a boom "so quiet it will hardly be noticed by the public, if at all ... like distant thunder [or] the sound of your neighbour forcefully shutting his vehicle door outside while you are inside", according to media reports.

NASA is also requesting funds for research into "hypersonic" aircraft, machines that go many times the speed of sound. As Space.com revealed, such planes have conceivable applications as weapons or for space travel.

"Like the railways that brought American pioneers, business visionaries and pilgrims to tame the Wild West, these noteworthy new advances will open untold chances to broaden the scope of American activity and qualities into the new universes of space", the VP said. "What's more, by cultivating considerably more grounded organizations between the government and the domain of industry, and bringing the full power of our national enthusiasm to hold up under, American initiative in space will be guaranteed".
