Katie Couric Mocked For Comments Made About Dutch Speed Skating Team

U.S. journalist Katie Couric said she was "on thin ice" and apologised on Tuesday after she was relentlessly mocked for claiming Dutch success at the Olympics was because skating is an "important mode of transport" in the Netherlands.

The veteran news anchor and interviewer mistakenly said that the Dutch are so successful in speed skating because skates have been used as a form of transportation when canals freeze in the Netherlands.

Off course, our Dutch neighbours do skate on the canals continuously, in the same way as we, Belgians, are blue, live in mushrooms and our prime minister wears red pants.

Following the flurry of backlash regarding her Opening Ceremony comments, Katie herself took to Twitter to apologize for her gaffe.

It's no secret the Dutch are quite good at speed skating.

"You just can't make this up", one user wrote.

Couric came out of semi-retirement to broadcast this year's Opening Ceremony, and prepared for these Games on a limited schedule.

Katie Couric apologized Monday night after being mercilessly mocked on social media for claiming that the Dutch are so good at speed skating because it's a "an important mode of transportation" in the Netherlands.

The comments from Friday's ceremony have even gotten some at the Dutch Olympic Committee into a merry mode. "And this folks is why Americans are less bright about the rest of the world as they spread fake news!"

The NBC presenter tweeted, "My apologies for being on thin ice for my comments re: skating on canals".

The Netherlands' Koen Verweij competes in the men's 1,500-meter speed skating event during the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics. That's a lot less fun than imagining Dutch people in 2018 skating to and from work (at the windmill or wooden shoes factory, naturally), but that's the price we all pay for truth. MarketWatch, citing The Korea Times, reported that an NBC official said it is no longer possible for Joshua Cooper Ramo to work with the network.
