Manchester United planning defensive reboot

Newly appointed England Women's manager and former Manchester United defender Phil Neville has branded centre-back pairing Phil Jones and Chris Smalling "a disaster" after Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.

Apparently the Manchester United boss "had misgivings about the pair" even before Sunday's shambolic 1-0 defeat at Newcastle but following their displays he has chose to part company with them at the end of the season.

Jones had an equally torrid time in United's last away game, a 2-0 loss to Tottenham at Wembley, when he scored an own goal to compound a slack performance.

United only have themselves to blame for falling so far behind, especially following the defeat at St James' Park.

Jones admitted United did not deserve to win, despite Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial missing clear-cut chances in each half.

Adding to it, both Smalling and Jones penned down a new deal with Manchester United back in 2015, keeping them at the club until 2019 and although talks about a potential extension are thought to be put on the table, nothing of sort have initiated till date.

Neville says the recent form of the duo has been "a disaster" and felt their play at the weekend made the rest of the United team nervous.

While Newcastle fans and pundits may criticise the referee for the decision, United fans have turned on Smalling for a horrendous display and what could have been a costly mistake. He netted an own goal for Tottenham's second, with Mourinho's description of the finish as "an wonderful goal Harry Kane would love to score" being far from supportive.

According to a report from the Daily Mirror, United boss Jose Mourinho is keen to land a new centre-back in summer that will see 28-year-old Smalling make way after eight years at the club.

"They were making decision that were unusual".

Reports today claimed Smalling and his defensive partner Phil Jones will be axed by the Red Devils this summer.
