Manipur encounters case: SC 'not satisfied' with probe, pulls up CBI's SIT

In a new twist to Kunduli case, the brother of the victim Sasmita on Sunday filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged gang rape and suicide of his sister.

The court made the remarks after the SIT apprised it that 42 cases have so far been registered on such killings.

The court directed the National Human Rights Commission to depute three officials to help the SIT with the investigation in 17 of the total 42 cases.

"We are not satisfied by the progress made by the SIT", the bench said.

The court also criticised the Special Investigation Team for submitting a status report in the case without the CBI chief's approval.

Bhubaneswar: Brother of the Kunduli girl, who was allegedly gang raped by security personnel in October past year and later committed suicide in January, 2018, has moved Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe into the incident.

On January 16, the court pulled up the SIT for not registering the required number of FIRs as directed by it earlier.

The bench passed this order on a writ petition filed by the Extra-Judicial Execution Victim Families Association (EEVFAM) alleging that 1528 fake encounter deaths have been recorded in Manipur in the last decade.
