Marriage to blame for female skier's struggles — NBC's Bode Miller

NBC commentator and former USA skier Bode Miller has apologised after foolishly suggesting an Olympian's marriage impacted her performance at the Winter Olympics.

Austria's Anna Veith took gold for Giant Slalom in 2014, but struggled while competing yesterday. "I want to point out she also got married", Miller said.

Veith, an Austrian World Cup alpine ski racer and Olympic gold medallist, married her longtime boyfriend in 2016. "Not to blame the spouses, but I just want to toss it out there that it could be her husband's fault".

Awkward silence ensued before Hicks continued without acknowledging Miller's comment. I know the support team you need. "And if you have the luxury of relying on a spouse, I know they are inevitably your biggest supporter", said Miller, per NBC. Especially on Valentine's Day, when the penalty for criticizing holy matrimony is always swift and severe.

Finally, he acknowledged his wife and the fact that it was Valentine's Day.

The former USA skiing star, who is making his TV debut as a skiing analyst for NBC's coverage of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, apologized repeatedly Thursday for comments he made during the women's giant slalom event about a racer's relationship having an effect performance.

I mean, he started by mentioning a legitimate hurdle to competition: Veith's ACL injury from 2016, before the World Cup season.

Miller won his fifth and final Olympic medal in the Super-G event in Sochi, two years after he married model Morgan Beck in 2012.

"Certainly I'm going to be hearing it from my wife, I know".

Miller has won six medals in the Winter Olympics, the most of any US skier, two silvers in Salt Lake City 2002, a gold, silver and bronze in Vancouver 2010 and a bronze in 2014.

Many people tweeted out their frustration with Miller's comments and he quickly sent out an apology saying that he wasn't "seriously blaming Anna Veith's lack of results on her husband".
