Myths about learning English

There are a lot of runarounds that prevent people from learning English “I don’t have abilities”, “I needed to learn in when I was a child”, “you have to go to England or the USA to know it” …and so on.  As the matter of fact, these are only myths and we are going to deconstruct them.

The myth #1: to learn the foreign language you need to have the high IQ or special abilities.

In some countries, the most number of the population knows the foreign language and it’s like their second native language. Do you really think they all were born with special abilities and the high IQ? Of course not! Even the shop assistant knows it, sportsmen, professors, etc.  That’s because while learning the foreign language they have the motivation, the opportunity to practice it, they spend a lot of time and efforts, and even have all paper writings, not on their native language- they challenge themselves.

The myth#2: it’s easier to learn the language for kids than for adults.

You can hear about a bunch of researches where scientists state that it’s way easier to learn the foreign language for kids than for adults. And it’s not because they are more capable- it’s because they have another approach. They “absorb” the language and don’t pay too much attention to rules and logic. They are not afraid to talk and make mistakes.

On the other side, scientists discovered that because of the self-discipline and the systematic approach, adults progress faster. They are able to understand and use difficult grammatical structure, their essay writings and compositions are more complicated and meaningful, they can learn more words. And again- the motivation is the key!

The myth#3: the residence in another country guarantees you the language learning.

A lot of people think that if you live in another country for 20 or more years then their English is perfect. Some of them still have a slight accent and make grammatical mistakes when they talk. The reason is that they think they already live in that country and don’t put that much efforts. They don’t feel the necessity to learn and know it better because the level they have is enough for them.

You also have to remember that native speakers won’t correct your mistakes. Even while living there you will need to pay a lot of attention to studying.  The advantages are only that you have the practice and the environment.

The myth#4: if you visit language courses, then it’ll be enough for the language studying.

Handling the grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and also the ability to read, understand and writing essays or compositions- it all needs time, repetitions and practice that is impossible in the classroom. The computer is more patient and free private tutor that is available anytime.

The myth #5:  the book is enough for studying.

Any course book has just the limited information on some certain topic. To really learn the language, you will have work on different aspects, choose necessary resources for each. For example, you can fulfill the exercise online and it’s better than to write it and it shows your mistakes automatically. The book can be only the writing Bee help on the composition or so.

The myth#6: the best way to learn English is simply talking.

Actually, we learn the language while reading and listening. In this way, we get to know about new grammatical structures and learn new words. And in communication we use everything. So, to talk without mistakes and be able to write, firstly, we need to read and listen a lot.

It’s not the whole list of myths that we can tell you about. If you have the motivation to learn the language, any myth or stereotype is just nothing.
