Nissan Altima unveil set for March 28 in NYC

Update: Nissan has confirmed the Altima will debut on March 28th. Those updates certainly made the vehicle look better, but under the skin, the 2018 Altima was the same as the 2012 Altima. The struggling midsize sedan segment may present a good opportunity for Nissan to back away from volume targets and instead aim for a more robust, competitive (and ultimately profitable) entry. Nissan just announced that the next-generation 2019 Altima will debut at the NY auto show next month.

The automotive world is now focused on the Geneva Motor Show but Nissan has just announced that it will use the New York Auto Show to introduce the redesigned Altima. The 2019 Nissan Altima could also get a new or revised engine lineup, and should offer the latest from Nissan's ProPilot Assist suite of advanced safety features. It's expected to land with styling like that of the Maxima. That would presumably mean a V-motion grille and that floating roof style current Nissan design language favors.

Of course, we don't expect Nissan to shake up the Altima formula too drastically. That likely has something to do with the USA market's shift away from cars toward SUVs and crossovers, but it could also be attributed to the Altima's advanced age.

There is also some suggestion that a new engine line might land or at least engines with new tech to allow Altima to compete better with other cars in the segment.

Early signs of that initiative were visible in Nissan's Rogue Sport-a transplant of the ROW-market Qashqai SUV-which is only slightly smaller than the company's existing Rogue but has a slightly more upscale, European feel.
