Police warning over knife crime

Police warning over knife crime

Police are also warning the friends and families who know their loved ones carry knives could also be prosecuted and sent to prison under the law of "joint enterprise".

"Gwent Police are proactively going after these weapons and the service has worked hard on campaigns and operations to prevent knifes and firearms from falling into the wrong hands and being used on our streets as lethal weapons".

Praising the campaign Pat McDougall, grandmother of Glen Corner who was killed on his 16th birthday, said: "The pain of losing someone as a result of any crime, not just knife crime, is enormous".

Chief Inspector Mark Baines, of Lancashire Police, said: "Too many families have been affected by knife crime with even one person being stabbed being one too many".

Op Sceptre is a countrywide operation, led by the Metropolitan Police, and aims to reduce the number of people, especially young people, who carry a weapon.

While knife crime in Lancashire is no worse than many other parts of the country, we are keen to stress that any incident involving a knife could have tragic consequences and destroy lives. If you are found illegally in possession of a knife you will be arrested, put before the court and brought to justice.

"We must raise awareness of the grave and serious consequences that carrying a knife can have, whether it's carried for protection or status, the fact remains you have a lethal and unsafe weapon in your possession". It's a vicious circle - their fear is often the reason they carry knives, sadly statistics show that those who carry a knife are more likely to become a victim themselves. It's just not worth the risk.

"Thankfully, County Durham and Darlington is a safe place to live and knife crime here is low, however public safety is an ongoing commitment and we want to take as many weapons off the streets as possible".

Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne said, "My message to everyone has to be "lose the knife, not a life"".

"We all have a role to play in tackling knife crime and during our week of action we are calling on communities to help us in our fight and encourage others to bin the blade before somebody is seriously hurt". Officers regularly deliver knife crime awareness messages alongside advice and guidance to children and young people across the county. "With my fellow PCCs, I will also be contributing to the Home Secretary's new strategy to tackle violent crime which will be developed over the coming months".

A recent investigation by the Gazette found three pupils aged 12 or under have been caught with knives at schools across South Tyneside in the last two years - but the figure is small compared to the rest of the United Kingdom where the number of young people caught on school premises with blades has risen by more than a third.

Anyone with information on knife crime should call 101 or report online. In an emergency always dial 999.
