Railways to invest Rs .73000cr to solve safety-related woes

India could spend up to $12 billion in upgrading the signalling system on its entire rail network over the next six years to the contemporary European Train Control System (or ETCS), rail minister Piyush Goyal said in an interview. The trains will require durable and compatible railway tracks, high maintenance of the tracks and the train carriages and enough power to keep the train going at that speed.

An announcement is expected in April.

For this, passengers can use overnight trains instead of bullet trains running at speeds of 350kmph. In 30 days one can't prepare a whole costing and detailing of suburban railways. Some options are building single pillars, or two-track corridors over national highways.

Rubbishing charges of the TMC that the Budget had slashed allocations to West Bengal, the Minister said that maximum allocation has been given to West Bengal despite the fact that they do not cooperate in providing land nor for project.

"This will significantly reduce the cost on land acquisition which is a major component on expenditure incurred on any project after the new act was enforced, " the report quoted a senior official as saying. According to a source, the actual plan is to introduce high-speed corridors across the country, which can cover a total distance of 10,000 km.

A 3,300km dedicated corridor for freight movement being mulled will also free up existing routes.

Talking to mediapersons here on the sidelines of a function, Mr Goyal said the NDA government in 2014 got the poor performing Indian Railways in legacy. In the last three years, over Rs. 3L crore has been spent in development of this sector.
