Will Germany's Social Democrats Take One More Chance on a Grand Coalition?

12 de febrero de 2018, 06:37Berlín, Feb 12 (Prensa Latina) The Secretary General of the Socialdemocrat Party of Germany (SPD), Lars Klingbell, indicated that forcé will defibne in March those who will occupy six ministerial posts they will have in the Government coalition.

The chancellor acknowledged in a Sunday interview with ZDF public television that it "was painful" to hand the powerful finance ministry to the Social Democrats.

"We sure did pay a price for a stable government", Merkel said.

Facing growing unrest from within her long-obedient CDU, party chief Merkel chose to defend the coalition deal, which must still be approved in an SPD party vote.

Others called for a renewal of the Christian Democrat leadership, a barely disguised push for Merkel's replacement.

The governor of Schleswig-Holstein state, Daniel Guenther, said earlier in daily Die Welt that "we need new faces" in the Cabinet. Last February 7, the SPD and the Demochristian Union (CDU), led by Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, signed an agreement to form a Great Coalition, formed also by Socialchristians (CSU), for the third time since 2005 that alliance governs the country.

"I understand the disappointment", she said, but stressed that she "naturally" planned to stick with her pledge to stay on for another four years, rather than make way for a successor before the end of the term. "And I'm one of those people who keeps a promise", she said, adding that she didn't feel a loss of authority.
