Delhi: Man posing as Uber driver locks woman inside cab, harasses her

In what can be seen as a major security threat for passengers, a woman had a narrow escape after a phony Uber cab driver allegedly threatened her and locked her inside the taxi. When the driver took an isolated route, she panicked and when tried to jump out of the auto, the driver activated the central locking system.

Commenting on the matter, the deputy commissioner of police (north-west) said that after the complaint was registered, the police teams were pressed into action and the accused was arrested from a village in Haryana in an inebriated state.

The woman felt threatened when the accused driver took the vehicle along a secluded route and was making unwanted advances and expressions, the police officer said. A police investigation revealed later that he wasn't the registered driver of the auto. When the cab arrived, it was carrying a white number plate instead of yellow commercial number plate, said police. We immediately removed the driver partner's access to the Uber App and will take strict action against him for letting an unregistered driver without a licence access his account and take trips via Uber App.

Meanwhile, responding to the allegations, the Uber spokesperson said that it is the case of "identity theft" and that the company has immediately removed the driver. It also had tinted glasses.

The woman lives with her husband in outer Delhi's Rohini and drives to work in Sonepat. As per police reports, the victim took the cab even after noticing that the cab was missing the yellow number plate. "She still took the vehicle", said the DCP. Just a few minutes after the ride started, the woman noticed that the driver had gone on an isolated route. "The driver called someone and spoke about meeting somewhere and drinking together". Uber takes the safety of riders and drivers using the Uber App extremely seriously. "The woman tried to jump out of the auto when it slowed down at a traffic junction near Mukarba Chowk, but the driver activated the central locking system", said Khan. "She screamed for help, but was unable to draw anyone's attention", said Khan. The woman managed to escape from the auto when the vehicle slowed down at a CNG station near GTK depot.
