Demi Lovato gives heartfelt speech about mental health, addiction

Taking the stage to join Demi, Khaled and Kehlani took the mic to congratulate her on achieving six years of sobriety, helping her ring in her "sober birthday" by singing the conventional "Happy Birthday" song.

Wowing the sold-out audience with the performance of a lifetime at New York City's Barclays Center, Lovato lit up the stage, along with record producer and radio personality DJ Khaled, at an epic showcase of vast talent on Friday, March 18.

After wiping away tears, Demi thanked her fans for saving her life.

Kehlani said: 'You give me hope and strength and pride, and every bit of myself that I am - the good side, the bad side, the amusing side, the quirky side.

"Six years ago, I was drinking vodka out of a Sprite bottle at nine in the morning, throwing up in the vehicle", Lovato said. This is no longer fun. And I just remembered thinking, 'This is no longer cute.

"The reason I became so open about my story is because I know that there are people here tonight that need to ask for help", she said, "and I want you to know that that's okay. So let's raise the awareness", Lovato told the attentive and respectful Brooklyn crowd. "Let's let everybody know it's okay to have a mental illness, it's okay to have an addiction problem".

The former Disney Channel star, who made a name for herself on Camp Rock, the monumental television film that drew massive ratings for the network, performed some of the biggest hits of her groundbreaking career, including "Cool for the Summer", "You Don't Do It For Me Anymore", and "Daddy Issues". Needless to say, the audience was passionately cheering her on the entire time.

Lovato went on to explain that she knew she had to change her behavior-something she discusses in depth in her YouTube documentary, Simply Complicated.

Demi added, "So I made changes in my life", she said. "Thank you for being a part of saving my life".

Grammy-nominated Kehlani, who has also been open about her personal struggles, thanked Lovato and said she's honored to know the singer.

The "Sorry Not Sorry" singer has previously struggled with drug and alcohol addictions, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and self-harm for years. "You are 100 percent yourself, and that is so rare in this world and this industry", she said to the singer. On Saturday, Lovato shared a sweet photo to Instagramhugging her mom, with the caption, "I love my momma so much #myhero".
