Dennis Smith Jr calls out judges' scoring in Dunk Contest

Mitchell was not even supposed to be in the slam dunk contest as he was only placed into the event two weeks ago after Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon was reported to be suffering from a hip injury.

The NBA dunk contest was a throwback in many ways, with a 21-year-old rookie and a 25-year-old, third-year pro fighting it out for the trophy.

Mitchell defeated Larry Nance Jr.in the final round of Saturday's Verizon Slam Dunk, scoring 98 of a possible 100 on his two final-round dunks.

Mitchell, wearing to a Vince Carter Raptors jersey for a homage on his final dunk, completed Carter's 360 windmill dunk and celebrated it with the "it's over" pose Carter used in 2000. "This is one of my favorite events of All-Star Weekend, growing up as a kid watching it, not only being in it but to win it-it's insane".

"Growing up I was a big dunker". "I wasn't much of a basketball player".

But Dallas Mavericks rookie Dennis Smith Jr. took to Twitter to air a grievance about how he was scored in the opening rounds. "I've been seeing what he's been doing all year at his age, which is incredible". Fifty is a flawless score, which meant Smith's feat was worth the same number of points as Mitchell's less impressive scissor-kick slam over Kevin Hart and others.

In the final, Nance Jr. impressed, with what was immediately dubbed a "double-tap dunk" that was likely the highest degree of difficulty dunk pulled off by any competitor in the contest. The Phoenix Suns guard is averaging 24.2 points and 38.3 percent shooting this season, and he truly showed off his shooting by winning the three-point contest over Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors.

Booker was sensational in the final round, when he missed only five of 25 shots.

Brooklyn Nets point guard Spencer Dinwiddie claimed the Skills Challenge title.
