Djokovic suffers 'weird' loss at Indian Wells as he returns from surgery

Novak Djokovic's return from an elbow surgery did not live to see more than a day as the former World No. 1 fell 6-7 (3), 6-4, 1-6 to the 109th ranked Taro Daniel of Japan.

Djokovic took six months off after Wimbledon a year ago and returned in January's Australian Open where he lost in the fourth round.

Meanwhile, Federer progressed to Round of 32 of the ongoing ATP Masters event in California.

In their only other ATP meeting in 2013, Delbonis won on clay in Hamburg 7-6 (7), 7-6 (4). He surpassed Argentine Federico Delbonis after rain forced the Swiss tennis star a victory to wait until next morning on Sunday to clinch his first win of the tournament.

'You can't really look ahead to semi-finals, finals and speculate about who you could play, ' Federer said.

Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam champion, has already won the Australian Open and Rotterdam Open this year.

Roger Federer will play Jeremy Chardy in the last 16 at Indian Wells after beating Filip Krajinovic.

Djokovic scrambled to win the second set on Sunday but the rust from the layoff was evident as he made 62 unforced errors overall.

A five-time victor at Indian Wells, Federer needed less than an hour to crush Krajinovic. I just completely lost rhythm, everything.

Eighth seed Jack Sock, 18th seed Sam Querrey, 32nd seed Milos Raonic all progressed into the third round. So it was definitely nerve-wracking kind of, but I was enjoying it so much out there and I was playing my best.

Up to 7 courts, including the biggest matches of each day.

Yuki Bhambri of India pulled off a surprise when he toppled ninth-seeded Frenchman Lucas Pouille 6-4 6-4.

On Saturday, Federer led 6-3, 2-2 when the match was delayed by a heavy drizzle 56 minutes after it began. Fifth seed Karolina Pliskova too needed three sets to reach the fourth round but the French Open titlist Jelena Ostapenko bowed out.
