German police raid BMW in diesel emissions probe

"On suspicion of fraud in around 11,400 cases, prosecutors have opened an investigation against unidentified workers or managers at BMW and raided BMW headquarters in Munich and another site in Austria", the authorities said in a statement.

Both headquarters of German carmakers BMW and Volkswagen have been searched on Tuesday by German prosecutors. Legal sources said the facility searched in Austria was BMW's engine plant in Steyr, where the company employs about 4,500 staff and assembles 6,000 engines a day.

Prosecutors in Germany have raided high-end carmaker BMW in a fraud probe relating to more than 11,000 vehicles they suspect were rigged to appear less polluting in regulators' tests.

BMW said that in the course of internal testing, the BMW Group "realised that a correctly developed software module had been allocated in error to models for which it was not suited".

Germany's Wirtschaftswoche reported earlier on Tuesday that state prosecutors had started fresh investigations into suspicions of market manipulation at the company to determine whether Volkswagen had understated carbon dioxide emissions on more vehicles than it had publicly admitted.

BMW last month recalled 11,700 cars to fix engine management software after discovering the wrong programming had been installed. "A corrected software will be made available as soon as it has been approved by the relevant authorities", the carmaker was quoted as saying by the Financial Times.

The authorities said they were checking a statement issued by VW on December 9, 2015 over suspicions its contents were not correct and whether it therefore represented a case of market manipulation. "BMW continues to assume this was a mistaken allocation of software and not a targeted manipulation of emissions controls".
