Halep beats Wang to reach Indian Wells quarter-finals

Halep beats Wang to reach Indian Wells quarter-finals

The world number one emerged on top of a tight first set and rolled through the second over the course of a 7-5, 6-1 defeat of Wang on Tuesday, reports Xinhua news agency.

The first Croat to reach the round 16 at Indian Wells since 1997 when Iva Majoli lost to Venus Williams collecting her first top 10 win, beat 6-3 7-6 Marketa Vondrousova.

If Wang was high on confidence following her performances earlier in the tournament, her morale was surely raised further as she twice responded immediately to falling a break down in set one.

Halep overcame a sluggish start to beat Wang Qiang 7-5-6-1 in the fourth round to book a last eight berth against Petra Martic in the California desert. "I am confident. I am feeling the game", she said. "I had the crowd behind me and that felt good", said Williams.

Fifth seed Karolina Pliskova ended teenage American Amanda Anisimova's run with a 6-1 7-6 (7-2) victory. Wozniacki had a chance to get the No. 1 back but she needed to win the Indian Wells title to do it.

Simona Halep is into the quarterfinals at Indian Wells.

Halep had to work in the opening set before cruising in the second against the world No.55.

"I knew it would be like that because we practised a few days ago and she beat me in practice", she added.

Pliskova will play another youngster in 20-year-old Naomi Osaka after she defeated Greece's Maria Sakkari 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals at Indian Wells for the first time.

Kerber thus extends her head-to-head lead over Garcia to 4-2, and avenges her loss to the Frenchwoman in their most recent match - a first-round encounter past year at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open that kickstarted Garcia's run to back-to-back titles in Wuhan and Beijing and a spot in the Top 10.

"She is a very tough opponent because she is serving pretty strong and also the forehand has a lot of top spin".

Halep's coach, Darren Cahill, tweeted during a conversation with former world number one Chris Evert that returning female tennis players "should not be penalised for giving birth by starting from zero".
