Japan's Taro Daniel eliminates Djokovic at Indian Wells

Defending champ Roger Federer's opening match was put on hold Saturday when play at the Indian Wells Master event was suspended after heavy rain swept through the California desert.

Federico was off to a better start in set number two, holding easily in the opening two service games to be leveled at 2-2 before the rain started to fall, forcing the organizers to call it a day and move the match into Sunday's program.

The 30-year-old Serbian, seeded 10th in the tournament, lost to Japanese qualifier Taro Daniel 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 in second-round action.

Djokovic underwent right elbow surgery after falling in the fourth round of the Australian Open in January. Djokovic sprinted out to a 5-2 lead against the 25-yard-old from Japan, but his mistakes began to add up and he finished with 58 unforced errors.

Federer stressed it was always going to be hard for the six-time Australian victor to impress on his return from injury, which is why the 36-year-old was not surprised following Djokovic's struggle in Indian Wells.

Djokovic was defeated by the enthusiasm of his rival, who did not miss the unique opportunity to win the game during the first time they played against each other. "Very weird. I completely lost rhythm", said the Serb.

Gael Monfils upset No. 15 seed and 2012 runner-up John Isner 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-5.

World number three Marin Cilic also won Sunday, defeating Hungary's Marton Fucsovics in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.

Federer and 10th seed Djokovic both came into the tournament seeking to become the first six-time victor of the event.

Federer won the Indian Wells championship for a fifth time previous year, adding to his crowns in the Southern California desert in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2012.

"It feels insane. I mean, I'm still in shock", Anisimova said.

"I played the best set of the whole match, and that was really good". "It was a good day". So it was definitely nerve-wracking kind of, but I was enjoying it so much out there and I was playing my best.
