Jose Mourinho to sell these two Man United stars in the summer

Manchester United look primed to spend more money in defence in the summer, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones reportedly set to be offloaded.

The Mirror report claims that Mourinho has had "misgivings" about the pair for some time, and Smalling is likely to leave the club in the summer.

Smalling dived and conceded the free kick that Newcastle scored their victor from while Jones was caught out against Tottenham and scored an own goal in the 2-0 loss.

The 28-year-old has just over a year remaining on his current Manchester United, the same as Jones, with no developments over a renewal.

Jones produced an underwhelming display in United's 2-0 loss to Tottenham at Wembley earlier this month.

He netted an own goal for Tottenham's second, with Mourinho's description of the finish as "an fantastic goal Harry Kane would love to score" far from supportive.

Despite the Old Trafford outfit boasting the best defensive record in the Premier League, their frailties are starting to be exposed.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is one player United are being linked with, as well as Leicester and England defender Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils have been without one of their first-choice defenders Eric Bailly for much of this season due to an ankle injury and it remains to be seen when he will be back in action for Manchester United.

It hasn't gone unnoticed at United that their two biggest rivals, Liverpool and Manchester City, forked out £75m and £57m on centre-backs Virgil van Djik and Aymeric Laporte last month, and consequently Mourinho has told the United board that "they must start spending big on defenders".

He said: "They've got the best defensive record because they have the best goalkeeper in the world in David De Gea, and Nemanja Matic out in front who protects them really well".

"But the last two away games [against Tottenham and Newcastle], Smalling and Jones have been a disaster".

"Against Newcastle did they make many mistakes, no, but they created a nervousness and a tension".
