Karti Chidambaram Sent to Jail

Karti Chidambaram Sent to Jail

Karti's father P Chidambaram was also present in the courtroom during the hearing today.

"The apprehension raised by the senior counsel for accused can not be ignored keeping in view the social status of accused and his family, more specifically, his father who is a former union minister".

The Court, however, dismissed Karti's plea for early hearing of his bail application. However, the judge directed Tihar Jail authorities to provide and ensure proper safety and security to Karti during the judicial custody.

Special CBI judge Sunil Rana said the social status of the accused can not be the basis for a separate prison.

Karti was produced in the court of special judge Sunil Rana, before whom CBI counsel VK Sharma moved an application for judicial custody.

He has been in CBI custody since his arrest on February 28 from the Chennai airport upon his arrival from the UK.

"During the entire period of police custody remand, Karti Chidambaram was evasive and non-cooperative". The court also declined his request for a separate cell in Tihar jail, and protection inside the jail premises. "Some of the accused related to those cases are lodged in Tihar so I apprehend a great threat to my security", he said.

CBI then argued in opposition to the plea for separate cell on the ground of "threats", and said if at all they were threats, they would be for P Chidambaram and not for Karti.

It is noteworthy that Karti's lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, asking for an extension of the remand, said that the CBI comes with some excuse for remand every time.

The businessman also demanded home cooked food, medicines, toiletries and spectacles. The court is likely to hear the CBI matter on March 19.

Meanwhile, Karti's chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman, who is now in jail in a case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), has moved the court for anticipatory bail in the CBI case of INX Media.

The former finance minister's son is being investigated by the CBI for laundering money he received as payoffs to facilitate investment approval in INX Media when his father was the country's finance minister.

After confirming that she had paid a bribe to Karti Chidambaram in the INX Media case, Indrani Mukerjea has now agreed to identify the location too.
