NDA govt has messed up economy, mismanaged J&K dispute: Manmohan Singh

"The defense expenditure of our country is no more than 1.6% of our GDP". Regrettably, this is being undermined by the Government by making policy towards Pakistan a divisive domestic issue. "The Modi government has mismanaged issues in J&K like never before". They have installed a Govt where the two wings of the administration are working against each other. "It is obvious from the fact that our borders are insecure, be it cross border terror or internal".

The Modi government, he said, possibly feels that these issues will get sorted out on their own.

The resolution added: "The world today, is going through a comprehensive transformation in worldwide relations. Jammu & Kashmir is an integral problem of India and must recognise that".

The Congress moved in that direction, he said, whether it was with Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka, or countries such as China. The former PM said that India now standing at the crossroads, and while it has many opportunities in hand, it also faces many challenges. "We must warn Pakistan that this is problematic to the peace in sub-continent".

"However, its support to terrorism is not acceptable".

"Today, the Indian economy is decoupled from the world economy which is growing", he said.

Singh, a noted economist and former finance minister, disparaged the budgetary allocations made by the government for the defence sector, calling it "inadequate" given the current geo-political scenario in India's neighbourhood.

Those were the challenges that the Congress had to take up again, he stressed.

The BJP has messed up the economy. "This is only jumla and tall promises made by PM Modi". Those promises have not been fulfilled, he said. He said that they will provide two crore jobs. We have not seen even 2 lakh jobs, ' he said.

The Congress leader slammed demonetization and the way the Goods and Services Tax was implemented and said the Bharatiya Janata Party had promised to create two crore jobs every year. "And that is unthinkable", he said.

In its 84th Plenary session, the party noted that the Modi's tendency to disparage his predecessors and diminish India's achievements since Independence has undercut the country's credibility overseas.

"Modi ji himself recognises that these are tall promises".

'Foreign policy that India pursued had a blend of pragmatism, idealism, and a deep print of the vision of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, ' Sharma said, adding that under the Congress-led UPA government, there was a strong national consensus on India's foreign policy.
