Packers to land Muhammad Wilkerson

A team like Green Bay can afford to take a risk on Wilkerson to see if that player who earned a big deal is still in there. Wilkerson's signing won't count toward the compensatory pick formula, which played a key role in steering the Thompson-era Packers away from free agency, like Graham's will since the defensive lineman is a street free agent.

Wilkerson is clearly betting on himself to rehab his value around the league by playing for a year under Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, his coach in NY for the first two seasons of his NFL career. The deal is reportedly worth a maximum of $8 million, per NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

Wilkerson also visited the Saints, Chiefs and Redskins, with the Washington summit occurring Monday, but made a decision to sign with the Packers. "#Packers should be getting a motivated player". Pettine served in the same capacity for the Jets from 2009 to 2012 and coached Wilkerson during his first two years in the league.

One can assume new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine had a say in this signing.

Muhammad Wilkerson is on his way to the Green Bay Packers.

A Pro Bowler in 2015 and twice a second-team All-Pro, Wilkerson will help strengthen the Packers' front-seven.

New Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst indicated he might use free agency more than predecessor Ted Thompson did, and that's coming to fruition early in the period.

With Wilkerson now in the fold, the Packers have a formidable defensive line that also includes Mike Daniels and Kenny Clark.

Wilkerson, 28, dealt with ankle and shoulder injuries while managing just eight sacks over the last two reasons. He noted it's a "position we're looking at heavily" on Tuesday evening, via ESPN.
