Pennsylvania House race still too close to call, Dem Lamb claims win

"We're going to fight all the way to the end". It's not over yet. "It's unusual for a race with this many votes in it to be this close, but it happens". He added that in a race this close it may remain open until next Tuesday when military and overseas ballots are counted.

With TV networks, which often call US elections, yet to predict a victor, officials were continuing to count several hundred absentee ballots to try to determine the result.

It's the home of the 18th Congressional District, which held a special election Tuesday to send a new representative to Washington.

The 60-year-old Air Force veteran turned state lawmaker and college instructor enjoys enthusiastic backing from social conservatives who've anchored his state career, and he's perhaps at his most animated when he touts his opposition to abortion rights.

Comparing Tuesday's results to the elections in New Jersey, Virginia, and Alabama previous year will be much more indicative of the electorate's mood heading into the midterms, he said.

Apparently there is no automatic recount. However, a recount is possible if three voters in every precinct petition for one.

Libertarian Drew Gray Miller had 1,351 votes - more than enough to make the difference between the two major party candidates.

Republicans had prepared Tuesday for a loss following a tightening of polls in recent days and openly attacked their candidate.

"This is a very tough environment for Republicans", said Corry Bliss of the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis. The candidate campaigned with him twice. Greene questioned. "Rick Saccone has walked the walk". When I texted Mike Cernovich, conspiracy theorist and king of the MAGA faction of the Internet, to get his thoughts, he was initially confused: "I don't even know who is running or that there was a race!"

The eventual results will have national implications, even if court-ordered redistricting means the seat won't exist by the time the victor runs for re-election in November.

Guests have their photo taken at a watch party for Republican Congressional candidate Rick Saccone at the Youghiogheny Country Club in Elizabeth Township, Pa.as the polls close on March 13, 2018.

Republicans are hoping to prevent the district that Donald Trump won handily from falling into Democratic hands.

The steelworkers, Bonier said, have been out in places like Mobile and southwestern Virginia, "knocking on doors that hadn't been knocked on in years", and so helping Democrats and progressives find "a foothold with these voters".

And conversations with voters Tuesday left little doubt those factors were part of what propelled Lamb's candidacy.

Democratic sources said absentee ballots were expected to show Lamb winning the election by more than 400 votes, but Saccone did not concede.

"I think just the fact that we're talking about a competitive election in Pennsylvania 18 is certainly a sign that the Democrats are finding traction with white working class voters", said Democratic pollster Tom Bonier, CEO of TargetSmart, a data firm that works for the DNC. Frequently clad in jeans and beat-up work boots at campaign events, he talked about the economy and jobs, focusing his outreach on veterans and union members.

Trump won the district in 2016 by 20 percentage points.

Heading into Tuesday's vote, polling showed Lamb with a slight edge in the district - considered Republican territory in southwest Pittsburgh, where President Donald Trump beat Democrat Hillary Clinton by almost 20 points in 2016.

Speaking before Lamb claimed victory, Saccone - who has described himself as "Trump before Trump was Trump" - said the contest was not yet over.

In the wake of school shootings across the country, Dellana said she had been outraged to see Trump call for arming teachers instead of limiting access to semiautomatic weapons.

"He can't keep his big mouth shut, he can't stop tweeting, and he can't stop saying the wrong things at the most inopportune times", he said.

There are some people who believe the 18th race may have been a factor in Trump's push to announce new tariffs on imported steel.
