Ramaphosa congratulates Chinese president on his re-election

China's parliament unanimously reappointed Xi Jinping as president while installing one of his most trusted allies as vice president, highlighting how little public opposition remains to his rule.

The Chinese prime minister, Li Keqiang, was also re-elected by the National People's Congress for a second five-year term over the weekend but the elevation of Mr Xi suggested that Mr Li's influence was in decline, and that the new government would be dominated by supporters of the president.

Xi used the speech to espouse his vision of realising the "rejuvenation of the Chinese nation" - the "greatest dream" of the world´s second-largest economy.

The session also saw the election of Wang Qishan as the vice president of China, and Li Zhanshu as the chairman of NPC Standing Committee.

- Xi will seek to increase Chinese assertiveness in its near overseas to distract those who oppose the constitutional amendments.

Wang bowed twice and then walked over to Xi to shake his hand after the vote was announced inside Beijing's Great Hall of the People. "He has effectively put himself at the center of the whole country".

The vote came a day after party leader Xi Jinping was reappointed China's president with no limits on how many terms he can serve.

Wang's appointment to the vice presidency allows Xi to retain a trusted surrogate with connections to the USA diplomatic and financial communities.

His appointment is seen as pointing to continuity in monetary policy even as one of the world's biggest central banks is gaining considerable new regulatory powers.

The two are believed to have first met while serving as "sent-down youths" in impoverished Shaanxi province during the 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.

The re-election that took place on Saturday morning comes just six days after the NPC adopted an amendment in the country's constitution, which among other things removed term limits for presidents.

China suspects Tsai wants to push for formal independence, which would cross a red line for Communist Party leaders in Beijing, though Tsai has said she wants to maintain the status quo and is committed to ensuring peace.

"Basically, it's him minimizing collective leadership withzout abolishing the institution altogether", Xie said. With this power grab, Mr. Xi has made it obvious that human rights do not inevitably flow from free market power.

Lawmakers last Sunday also named Yang Xiaodu as National Supervision Commission chief, Zhou Qiang as Supreme People's Court president and Zhang Jun to become procurator-general of the Supreme People's Procuratorate.

As part of the shake-up, the PBOC was given the responsibility of drafting new laws and regulations for the banking and insurance sectors, and with it new authority over China's financial system.

And with the party, the PLA and the Chinese people united around the CPC Central Committee with Mr Xi at its core, there are no problems that cannot be solved, challenges that cannot be overcome and no goal that cannot be attained.
