Russian Federation summons British ambassador over spy poisoning dispute

It ordered the diplomats to leave within a week. British Ambassador Laurie Bristow was called to the Foreign Ministry Saturday morning to be informed of the moves.

Britain's defence minister said on Thursday that Russia should shut up and go away as London and Moscow traded insults over the nerve agent attack on a former Russian double agent in the English city of Salisbury.

Presidential press-secretary Dmitry Peskov told the state-run Tass news agency: "We have already said on many levels that Russian Federation has nothing to do with this story whatsoever". "We have responded to that".

While Russia has vigorously denied involvement in the attack, Western powers see it as the latest sign of alleged Russian meddling overseas.

The UK government was backed this week by allies France, Germany and the United States in its assessment that there was "no plausible alternative explanation" than that Russian Federation was responsible for the nerve agent attack.

A post-mortem exam on the Russian exile, who had links to compatriots who died in mysterious circumstances in the United Kingdom, "gave the cause of death as compression to the neck", a police statement said. Russian Federation also suspects foul play in Glushkov's death and opened its own inquiry yesterday.

British police said there is no apparent link between the attack on Glushkov and the poisoning of the Skripals, but both have raised alarm in the West at a time when Russian Federation is increasingly assertive on the global stage and facing investigations over alleged interference in the Donald Trump's election as US president.

Speaking during a visit to the Battle of Britain Bunker museum in Uxbridge, with his Polish counterpart, Jacek Czaputowicz, Mr Johnson had said: "Our quarrel is with Putin's Kremlin, and with his decision - and we think it overwhelmingly likely that it was his decision - to direct the use of a nerve agent on the streets of the United Kingdom, on the streets of Europe, for the first time since the Second World War". Russian Federation is expected to announce the expulsion of British diplomats and possibly other measures in a retaliatory move.

Russian Federation has insisted it is ready to cooperate in investigating the attack in Salisbury if Britain reciprocates by sharing the evidence it holds.
