Scientist Stephen Hawking dies at 76

Stephen Hawking, the legendary theoretical physicist and author of "A Brief History of Time", has died at age 76. "His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world", the statement said.

"He once said, "It would not be much of a universe if it wasn't home to the people you love".

A spokesman for Hawking's family also confirmed the news to the BBC.

Even though his body was attacked by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, when Hawking was 21, he stunned doctors by living with the normally fatal illness for more than 50 years.

He completed his doctorate on the origins of the universe, became a research fellow at Caius College and married Wilde in 1965. The book addressed, and explained, complex concepts such as black holes, the big bang and the relation of space and time.

He was given only a few years to live after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 1963 at the age of 22. As his condition worsened, he had to resort to speaking through a voice synthesiser and communicating by moving his eyebrows.

In 1970, Hawking realised the mathematical approaches he developed with Penrose could be applied to black holes, a term coined by physicist John Wheeler.

The title "A Brief History of Time" was subsequently used for a 1991 documentary about Hawking himself, directed by Errol Morris with music by Philip Glass.

The 2014 movie about his life, "The Theory of Everything", was nominated for Best Picture, and Eddie Redmayne, who played Hawking, won the Oscar for Best Actor.

"Professor Stephen Hawking is a brilliant man and a mediocre student", Mr. Obama said.

"It is time to explore other solar systems".

In May last year, Hawking warned that humans should leave earth within 100 years if we wanted to survive.
