Seaside High teacher believed to have accidentally fired gun in class

One month after the deadly Valentine's Day Florida school massacre, which claimed 17 innocent lives, a teacher from Seaside High School, California, accidentally fired a gun during a safety class on Tuesday.

Classes at the school resumed shortly after the unfortunate incident.

The teacher involved was identified by police as Dennis Alexander, who is a reserve police officer for the City of Sand City as well.

A 17-year-old student was injured by a bullet fragment or by debris that fell off the ceiling, Pridgen said.

"You could see like splatters on the ceiling", Student Fermin Gonzales IV said. No one was seriously injured.

The letter also stated that the school district is unable to share any other details other than Alexander has been placed on administrative leave for the duration of the on-going investigation.

Alexander had been a reserve Sand City police officer for 11 years.

Even with a permit, teachers across California are not allowed to carry firearms. His track record was described as "positive and professional" and he was also made the 2013 Reserve Office of the Year. The incident, ironically, occurred during a lesson on public safety in a class called Administration of Justice. "I have concerns about why he was displaying a loaded firearm in a classroom", Ferrante told KSBW. The authorities are unsure whether the victim's neck injury was due to the bullet from Alexander's gun or debris from the ceiling.

An email was sent out by the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District to the parents, stating: "Upon learning of the incident, our Human Resources department, school site administration and the Seaside Police Department immediately began investigating the incident, including interviewing students in the class". "The safety of your student is always our top priority, and we will continue to remain vigilant in our efforts to keep them safe while they are under our care".

Guns in schools are illegal in California but there is an exception for peace officers or those granted specific permission.

"We'll need to revisit protocol to make sure all staff members understand that is the policy", Diffenbaugh says.

He adds that, "Clearly, we will revisit this incident to ensure that something like this would never happen again".
