Sigurdsson still has World Cup chance despite knee injury

Gylfi Sigurdsson's chances of playing for Iceland at the World Cup remained alive on Wednesday, when Everton announced he will be sidelined for up to eight weeks by a knee injury.

If Sigurdsson recovers from his injury before the end of the Premier League season, he could be ready for the trip to face Huddersfield Town at the end of April.

Sigurdsson sustained the injury in Everyone's 2-0 home win against Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League in Saturday.

GYLFI SIGURDSSON could endure up to eight weeks on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

"We'll continue to assess Gylfi's progress on a week-to-week basis", Everton manager, Sam Allardyce, said on the club website.

The timeframe for recovery means the 28-year-old, who joined Everton from Swansea last summer in a club-record deal, is likely to miss the rest of the Premier League campaign.

Iceland play Argentina in their first ever World Cup group game in just over 90 days, and the nation has been holding their collective breath hoping to have him back in time for the tournament.

The midfielder has scored six goals in 30 appearances since joining Everton in a £45m move from Swansea last summer and is expected to play a major role for Iceland when they make their World Cup debut in Russian Federation later this year.
