Siri will read your hidden iPhone lock screen notifications to anyone

Siri will read your hidden iPhone lock screen notifications to anyone

Brazilian site Mac Magazine has found that, even with this feature enabled, anyone can reveal the contents of your hidden notifications simply by asking for a little help from the virtual assistant.

As of iOS 11, you can set message notifications to be hidden on your Lock screen - you can see that a message has arrived, but its content is hidden. But for other messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Skype, Siri will happily disclose the content of the messages to anyone who picks up the locked phone.

Even with the "Show Previews" featured set to display only "When Unlocked"(Settings Notifications Show Previews), you can still ask Siri to read any hidden notifications out loud by saying "Hey Siri, read my notifications".

The bug obviously raises privacy concerns, particularly since numerous affected apps - like Telegram and Signal - bill themselves as highly secure and encrypted platforms. According to Mac Magazine, the issue exists in iOS 11.3, the latest version of Apple's mobile OS, which is on the verge of public release. We tried again and again to get Siri to read texts, but it demanded we unlock our iPhones first.

Until Apple rectifies this, you can avoid any potential privacy snooping by turning off lock screen notifications for sensitive apps. It has reported it to Apple.

This privacy bug has been verified in iOS 11.2.6 and iOS 11.3 beta and has been reported to the iPhone maker. In the meantime, to protect yourself, you can go to Siri's settings page and disabling the "Allow Access When Locked" option.
