Thad Matta will not take Georgia basketball coaching job, per report

According to Jeff Goodman of ESPN, former Ohio State head coach Thad Matta has turned down overtures from Georgia to be its next head basketball coach. Earlier this month, Matta was in Oxford meeting with Ole Miss about replacing Andy Kennedy, but that school has now turned to Middle Tennessee coach Kermit Davis to fill that vacancy.

Georgia had reportedly offered Matta a five-year contract worth at least $16 million, an annual figure that slightly exceeded the $3.182 million he'd made in the final year of his contract in Columbus. "Unfortunately, I just don't feel that I am completely ready at this point to give [Georgia athletic director] Greg McGarity and the University of Georgia what they deserve".

It was a bit of a surprise on the heels of Matta mutually agreeing to leave Ohio State largely because of recruiting concerns over his ailing back and health. But it's unlikely that a low-ball offer was out there, or numbers in a contract played a role in Matta turning the job down. He parted ways with the Buckeyes last June after 13 seasons. Georgia (18-15) lost to Kentucky in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference Tournament, ending the Bulldogs' hopes of landing a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Other schools looking for a new coach have surely noticed.
