UConn Women Stomp St. Francis (PA); Sets Tournament Scoring Record

Geno Auriemma's Huskies blew out the Northeast Conference's St. Francis (Pa.) team 140-52, setting a new record for points scored in an NCAA tournament game.

UConn set the NCAA tournament record for points in a game, the NCAA record for points in a quarter, the NCAA tournament record for points in a half and assists in a game, plus the NCAA record for points in a half. U.Conn.'s 88-point win is the second-largest in NCAA men's or women's tournament history, behind Baylor women's basketball's 89-point win against Texas Southern previous year. The previous mark for points in a half was 80 and for a quarter was 45. The Baylor Lady Bears beat Texas Southern by 89 points during last year's tournament.

As good as they are though, what they did in the first round of their NCAA Women's Tournament game Saturday surprised everyone. Alabama set the original record in 1995 with 121 points in four overtimes. Wilkins had eight points during the run and Stephanie Reid added six.

UConn's total only is second in NCAA tournament history - men or women - to Loyola Marymount, whose men's team scored 149 points in 1990. That's ninety-four points, as in one more than 93 and one fewer than 95. It's the first meeting between the schools in 20 years. Bottom-seeded St. Francis has never won in the tournament.

An 8-for-30 half on three-pointers. That's not "19.4" points.

STANFORD, Calif. - China Dow scored 21 points and played stingy defense in the paint against Missouri star Sophie Cunningham, and Florida Gulf Coast pulled off an upset in the Lexington Regional.
