Volkswagen to Launch ramp up EV Production with 16 new Plants

The production plan is an update on the original plan called "Roadmap E" announced past year. The "Roadmap E" plan will retool an additional nine group plants to manufacture electric vehicles in just two years. The contracts already awarded have a total volume of around €20 billion (US$24.7 billion). However, under the group's new directive, this number is set to quadruple within just two years, as Volkswagen seeks to extend EV production to 16 of its factories by the end of 2022.

Previous year in August, former Volkswagen executive Oliver Schmidt plead guilty in ties to the diesel emission scandal which resulted in a $25 billion loss for the company. By 2025, Müller said, VW Group will be building 3 million EVs a year globally.

A decision will be made on the battery production supplier for North America, "shortly".

He admitted the Volkswagen Group will roll out 80 new electric cars and SUVs by 2025, with a heavy focus on Volkswagen-, Porsche- and Audi-badged cars.

Critically, the German automaker has already secured battery supply contracts for vehicles that will be sold in Europe and China, with contracts worth Euro 20 billion (~$25 billion USD).

"Over the last few months, we have pulled out all the stops to implement "Roadmap E" with the necessary speed and determination", Müller told his audience.

Experts see VW's repeated emphasis on this front as a means of getting rid of the stigma of "dieselgate" of 2015 that has continually haunted the firm. VW had to subsequently spend Dollars 29.7 billion to fix consumer-owned vehicles, plus pay a USD 2.8 billion fine to settle USA criminal charges.

"The diesel scandal told us there was a need for radical change; the crisis has acted as a catalyst", said Muller.

In 2018, Volkswagen will invest 20 billion euros in developing better diesel and gasoline engines, a sum which would be supplemented by 90 billion euros ($111 billion) over the next five years.

As we discussed in the latest episode of the Electrek Podcast, Volkswagen's electric auto efforts mostly consist of press releases and concept vehicles at this time, but they seem quite serious about it based on their investments.

Volkswagen also reiterates its sales revenue forecast to be up as much as 5 percent year over year and operating profit to between 6.5 and 7.5 percent, the company said in the statement.

Certainly the skeptics will have to wait nearly two years to see if long-range electric cars actually do land in showrooms in Europe, China, and North America.
