After Syria strikes, PM May to face critical parliament

Asked whether she could order new strikes if chemical weapons were found to have been used in the future, May said: "Nobody should be in any doubt of our resolve to ensure that we cannot see a situation where the use of chemical weapons is normalized".

But the prime minister may not find such backing when she faces parliament on Monday, where some lawmakers are angry that May took military action without their approval - a process that has increasingly become a tradition in Britain.

Her comments follow allegations by the head of an global chemical weapons watchdog on Monday that Syrian and Russian officials cited "pending security issues" to keep independent inspectors from reaching the site of the suspected April 7 chemical attack.

"The Syrian regime has reportedly been attempting to hide the evidence by searching evacuees from Douma to ensure samples are not being smuggled from this area".

In an unusual move, the British government said it would seek an emergency House of Commons debate on the airstrikes so legislators could have their say. The British lawmakers expressed their condemnation of the PM's action, with the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, on the forefront against May's decision. He said Britain should introduce a War Powers Act to ban military action without Parliament's approval. "We have done it because we believe it was the right thing to do - and we are not alone".

On Friday, air strikes were carried out by UK, US and French military forces in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack carried out by the Assad regime last week.

There are no plans as yet to repeat missile strikes on Syria, but Britain will consider further action if President Bashar al-Assad again uses chemical weapons against his people, foreign minister Boris Johnson said yesterday.

Now, she is enjoying an unusual spell of worldwide support for her action in Syria and her stance against Moscow over a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy in Britain.

The White House is weighing new sanctions against Russian Federation "in the near future" over Moscow's support for Syria's suspected chemical attack on a Damascus suburb that activists claim killed at least 40 people.

The ministers said the European Union "understands" the need for the co-ordinated U.S, French and British airstrikes following the suspected April 7 chemical attack.

Former Tory Party co-chairman Grant Shapps tweeted: "Chemical weapon use is abhorrent & internationally banned".

European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini says the bloc wants to use a major meeting on Syria next week to give impetus to United Nations peace moves following Western airstrikes on the country.

More than 70 delegations are expected at the April 24-25 donor conference for Syria in Brussels.
