Alleged N322m fraud: Court remands Ibori's ally, Nwaoboshi, in prison

Justice Mohammed Idris ordered his remand after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned him alongside his two companies, on charges bordering on the alleged fraud. He will be in detention till Friday when ruling on his bail application would be delivered.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday relocated Senator Peter Onyeluka Nwaoboshi to Lagos for trial for alleged unexecuted N4billion contracts and having 20 accounts in six banks with a different signatory.

Senator Peter Nwaoboshi representing Delta North senatorial district in the National Assembly, has been ordered to be remanded Ikoyi Prison.

Justce Mohammed Idris ruled Wednesday that Nwaoboshi be remanded till April 27 (Friday) pending the hearing of the Senator's bail application.

The EFCC alleged that the accused committed the offences between May and June 2014 in Lagos.

It claimed that N322 million out of the N805 million was part of proceeds of "an unlawful act, to wit: fraud".

A copy of the charge sheet made available to journalists, said Nwaoboshi is charged alongside his company, Golden Touch Construction Projects Ltd, and Suiming Electricals Ltd on a two count charge of money laundering.

However, the 60-year-old senator, who is also a lawyer, pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge preferred against him.

However, counsel to the first defendant, Dr. V. J. O. Azinge, pleaded with the court to grant her client bail in liberal terms.

After his plea, the prosecutor, MS Abubakar, told the court that in view of their pleas, a date for trial should be given, NAN reports.

The request was opposed to by the EFCC's lawyer on the ground that the motion was not ripe for hearing.

"This is a case of a pure commercial transaction", she added. Court aided PETER NWAOBOSHI AND GOLDENTOUCH CONSTRUCTION PROJECT LTD to commit laundering and you thereby committed an offense contrary to section 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act (as amended) and punishable under Section 15 (3) in conjunction with Section 15 (2)(d) of the same Act.

She argued: "The court does not wait for the indolent neither does equity ... the charge has been lingering and the defence is prepared to proceed; the court can stand down the case to enable prosecution file its papers".

He, however, conceded that the decision to grant bail was at the judge's discretion.
