Cosby trial: Constand set to return to stand

Andrea Constand told jurors she doesn't "recall ever having a conversation with" Marguerite Jackson.

A woman who is at the centre of the case against Bill Cosby is expected to take the stand on Friday in a Pennsylvania courtroom, where she previously accused the comedian of drugging and sexually assaulting her more than a decade ago. WNPV's Pete Reinert reports, Constand was cross examined by the defense about Margo Jackson.

Cosby's first trial ended in June when a jury deadlocked on all charges after more than 50 hours of deliberations.

Prosecutors objected, and Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Steven O'Neill sustained the objection.

The judge has ruled that Jackson can take the stand at the retrial but indicated he could revisit the issue after Constand was finished testifying.

As at the last trial, Constand seemed confident and composed as she testified at the retrial about her encounter with Cosby, and about how he offered her three small blue pills and a sip of wine after she said she was "stressed" about her plans to leave to study massage therapy in her native Canada.

Bill Cosby's defense group on Monday tried to hammer in the credibility of a woman who accused the comedian of attacking her in 2004, questioning whether or not she followed the provisions of a $3.38 million civil settlement he paid off her. Constand said Cosby asked her to "come pick up baked goods.I didn't know I was going to be going into his room".

The defense lawyer then asked, "Did you ever fabricate a scheme to falsely accuse him for money?"

The believability of the woman, Andrea Constand, is key to the prosecution's case, and defense attorney Thomas Mesereau sought, through a morning of careful cross-examination, to piece together an unflattering narrative of Constand as someone who reaped the rewards of a big financial settlement and then still set out to make sure he was prosecuted.

Bill Cosby is accused of drugging and sexually molesting Andrea Constand in his Cheltenham Township home in 2004.

He has been charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault; a conviction on any of the charges could get him 10 years in prison. She has testified that she saw the former TV star as a mentor and had no romantic interest in him.

After a series of phone calls, Constand, who was then in her 30s, said the married Cosby began inviting her to dinner at his house and other events.

Phone records show the former director of women's basketball operations at Temple University made brief calls to Cosby around the time of a Temple home game on February 14, 2004.

"You think you called Mr. Cosby to talk about basketball?"

Tom Mesereau grilled Constand about the civil suit she accepted from Cosby, totaling 3.38 million dollars.

Picking up where he left off on Friday (Saturday NZT), Mesereau questioned Constand about inconsistencies in her police statements and prior testimony.

Constand explained that she may have been mistaken, that there were times Cosby told her in advance that the gate would be open and that she often reached him at another number.

Constand claimed that Cosby had invited her to his place in 2004.

Cosby confessed to cheating on his wife for about ten years with several women in which he admits to drugging them with Quaaludes and/or bribing them with job help.
