FAA orders fan blade inspections after jet engine explosion

Southwest Airlines also opposed a recommendation a year ago to inspect fan blades like the one that caused an engine failure, leaving one passenger dead Tuesday.

The statements by some airlines that they are not required to track the history of each individual fan blade within an engine are significant because that makes it harder for investigators to be certain whether the engine that exploded on Tuesday was one of those already targeted for inspection. "Another wrote, "(She) came back to speak to each of us personally.

The NTSB's release didn't name the precise engine model in the 2016 incident, but the board named CFM International, the manufacturer of the engine that failed Tuesday, as being a subject of the investigation.

According to Reuters, engine-maker CFM International proposed safety checks on its engines last June after a fan blade separated from a Southwest engine in August 2016, citing federal documents. She died later from her injuries.

The plane, a Boeing 737 bound from NY to Dallas with 149 people aboard, made an emergency landing in Philadelphia just before noon as passengers breathing through oxygen masks that dropped from the ceiling prayed and braced for impact. Seven passengers were injured.

A nurse began administering CPR. He refused to provide details about his rescue efforts out of respect for Riordan's loved ones.

Bourman said she was seated near the back and was asleep when she heard a loud noise and oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling. "They said there's a hole, and uh, someone went out".

Jennifer Riordan died after debris destroyed the window next to her, causing the mother of two to be partially sucked through the opening. They said the blade showed signs of metal fatigue - very small cracks that can break apart under stress.

Southwest said after the incident that it was accelerating its existing engine inspection program "out of an abundance of caution" and expected to complete it over the next 30 days.

The airline issued the payments after a Tuesday flight from New York City to Dallas was rocked by an engine explosion in midair, killing one passenger. It is something the FAA proposed making mandatory almost a year ago, but the draft directive was never approved. According to FAA, the directive will require an ultrasonic inspection of fan blades when they reach a certain number of take-offs and landings. When that blade broke away at the fan's hub, it carried with it parts of the engine cowling and related engine parts. The plane is the most popular commercial airplane in the world. 737-700, was 18-years old although the engine may have been younger.

Dr Wright explained via email that detecting metal fatigue and similar anomalies have been a routine maintenance activity for many years, specifically for routine engine inspections. CEO Gary Kelly said there were no problems with the plane or its engine when it was inspected on Sunday.

American Airlines has about 300 planes with that type of engine, and Delta Air Lines has about 185. It won't be clear until the FAA issues its rule how many will need inspections.

Tuesday's emergency broke a string of eight straight years without a fatal accident involving a USA airliner.

Robert Sumwalt is chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board. Not all airlines operating 737s are affected. Sumwalt said the plane touched down at about 190 miles per hour, while a jet of that size would typically land at around 155 miles per hour.
