Facebook admits data failings as chiefs face questions from TDs

Facebook has faced questions from the data protection commissioner over the past month after it was found that Cambridge Analytica may have harvested the data of 87 million people through an app on the social network.

Contained within that privacy policy was extremely common language about the user given the app access to all sorts of information on your phone, including your Facebook contacts.

Facebook had this week confessed that data on nearly 87 Million users, mostly in the US, might have been inappropriately given to Cambridge Analytica. She adds that managing what information can and cannot be used by Facebook is quite complicated saying, "Even if you understand the Facebook business model, you would be hard pushed to know how far your data goes".

The results of the Facebook research: those who saw less negative updates used around one more positive words for every 2,000 words in their updates, and those who saw less positive updates (what you could call negative advertising) used around 1 less positive word per 100 in their status updates.

Summers, director of innovation, entrepreneurship and engagement at the University of Maryland's College of Information Studies. Senator Dianne Feinstein asked why Cambridge Analytica was not denounced and dumped years ago when Facebook discovered it had misused the platform.

At a minimum, "Facebook is going to have to think about ways to structure their technology to give that proper notice", said Woodrow Hartzog, a Northeastern University professor of law and computer science.

"Social media is eroding democracy", Summers said.

A group of users created a campaign called "Faceblock" for users to boycott Facebook on the day of Mark Zuckerberg's senate hearing, arguing that the site's users deserve better. People should log in to Facebook to find out what it's "capturing" about them, he said. Analytica, the data mining firm, has been blamed of getting personal data of more than millions of Facebook consumers unlawfully to manipulate polls in various nations.

That is, they measure a real action by the person they tried to influence. "Major organizations have been hacked before, like the IRS, but because social media is such a new thing and it's fun, we focus on the bad things when they do happen".
