Russian Federation warns of 'consequences' for US-led strike on Syria

New U.S. sanctions against Moscow will be hard for Russia but do more damage to the United States and Europe, RIA news agency cited a senior Russian lawmaker as saying on Sunday.

Damascus skies erupt with service to air missile fire as the U.S. launches an attack on Syria early Saturday, April 14, 2018. "Russian Federation will demand a meeting of the UN Security Council, I think, for sure", Vladimir Dzhabarov, who is the deputy head of Russia's foreign affairs committee, was quoted by RIA newsagency as saying. "The capital of a sovereign government, trying for years to survive under terrorist aggression, has been attacked", foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on Facebook.

Following the USA -led strikes, however, "we consider it possible to return to examination of this issue not only in regard to Syria but to other countries as well", Rudskoi said. "A pre-designed scenario is being implemented".

"Again, we are being threatened", Russia's ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, said in a statement.

"Not one of the cruise missiles released by the U.S. and its allies entered the zone of responsibility of Russian air defences protecting facilities in Tartus and Hmeimim", the ministry said in a statement carried by the RIA Novosti state news agency, referring to the locations of Russia's naval facility in Tartus and its Hmeimim air base.

"Insulting the President of Russia is unacceptable and inadmissible", added the envoy, after President Donald Trump directly called out his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin over his support for the Assad regime. In his speech announcing military action in Syria, Trump pointedly asked: "What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women, and children?"

'We can not allow the use of chemical weapons to become normalised - within Syria, on the streets of the United Kingdom, or anywhere else in our world.
