Russian Journalist Died after Falling from a Balcony

Miksim Borodin, who published a number of stories about the deaths of dozens of alleged Russian mercenaries who attempted to storm a US facility in Syria in February, died Sunday after falling five stories from his Yekaterinburg apartment balcony April 12. There is no reason why or how he has fallen from the balcony of his apartment on the fifth floor. Local officials ruled the death a suicide but his co-workers are refusing to believe he caused his own death.

He said the door to Borodin's apartment was locked from the inside and there was no sign of forced entry.

Local police said they did not see any foul play, but his death prompted intense speculation among friends and colleagues.

A friend of Borodin's, Vyacheslav Bashkov, wrote on Facebook on April 15 that Borodin contacted him at 5 a.m. on April 11 and said his building was surrounded by "security forces" wearing camouflage and face masks.

The news site Novi den said that their reported, Maksim Borodin, died in a hospital today, AP said.

He told Bashkov that he was certain his apartment was about to be searched, but that the authorities were waiting on a warrant.

Bashkov wrote on Facebook that Borodin called him back an hour later and said he was mistaken and the security officers were conducting a drill. He asked Bashkov to find him a lawyer.

A woman, who says she knew Borodin, told The New York Times to be cautious in reporting potential foul play.

In the past weeks, Borodin was covering the deaths of Russian mercenaries in Syria, identifying fighters who had been returned to their villages for burial and showcasing the Russian Ministry of Defense's denial that any Russian fighters were killed during the February 7th air strikes despite evidence to suggest otherwise.

Borodin regularly wrote on crime and corruption.

On February 7, a group of Russian mercenaries with tanks and artillery attacked territory held by USA -backed opponents of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
