Saudi king denounces 'blatant interference' by Iran in Arab affairs

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz, inaugurated the 29th Arab League Summit in Dhahran on Sunday at the King Abdulaziz International Cultural Center.

"We reiterate our rejection of the U.S. decision on Jerusalem", the royal said.

He announced the dedication of $50 million to UNRWA and $150 million to the Islamic Endowment Support Program in Jerusalem, stressing that east Jerusalem should be the capital of Palestine. The summit will be concluded by a major military parade, which will be attended by the leaders, headed by King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense.

He also announced a $150m (£105m) donation for the maintenance of Islamic heritage in East Jerusalem, including the Al Aqsa mosque, and $50m (£35m) in funding for the United Nations agency that provides aid to Palestinian refugees.

Saudi Arabia is pushing for a tough, unified stance against its regional arch-rival Iran at the annual gathering of the 22-member Arab League.

Western states have accused forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad of an attack with the use of chemicals in the Syrian town of Douma earlier in the month.

"Saudi Arabia is going to push for a much harsher stance on Iran - not necessarily on the nuclear dossier per se, but on Iranian influence in the Arab countries, particularly Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen", said Karim Bitar of the Paris-based Institute of worldwide and Strategic Affairs.

The Gulf states have donated large amounts of money to help refugees from the country but have not officially offered them asylum.

The stand-off between Qatar and Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt is also not expected to feature.
