Supreme Court denies Blagojevich appeal

The wife of imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich says she and their two children are disappointed that the Supreme Court decided not to hear her husband's appeal of his corruption convictions. Blagojevich also tried to sell or trade the Senate seat that Obama vacated after winning the 2008 US presidential election, prosecutors said. They also refused to hear his appeal in 2016.

The Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2015 voided five of Blagojevich's 18 convictions and ordered a resentencing, but U.S. District Judge James Zagel in Chicago reimposed the 14-year term. His attorneys tried to make the argument to the high court that the law does not clearly define the difference between legal and illegal political fundraising.

In briefs, Blagojevich argued the Supreme Court should take his case and rule that in a campaign finance prosecution, the government needs to prove there was an explicit quid pro quo in trade for the donation, not just something that's implicitly understood as a "wink and a nudge".

Blagojevich's release date is scheduled for May 2024.

The decision means that the only hope for an early end to the ex-Governor's prison sentence is if President Donald Trump decides to pardon Blagojevich or commute his sentence. Blagojevich had appeared on Trump's reality television program Celebrity Appearance.
